LEAF's Champions
LEAF is a literacy initiative that is administered in part by The Early Learning Coalition of Sarasota County (ELC) whose mission includes the support of early literacy intervention and development for children ages five and under.
The ELC recognizes not only the importance of adult interaction with young children in the family, but the great opportunities school age children have to engage with younger siblings in every day activities both within and outside the home environment. This means that the important message about talking, listening and reading to young children must also be carried to older siblings.
As Leaf's Champions they will become mentors to their younger brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and neighbors by reading, talking and listening to them.
LEAF Reading Log Contest Winners at Woodland Middle School
Winners of the LEAF reading log contest at Woodland Middle School proudly show off their $25 gift cards to Target . Students were asked to read to children 5 and younger and to keep a log. Once they filled in the log, they returned them to the library where they were entered into a drawing.
Three winners were chosen at random and are pictured left to right: Austin Spicer, Tanisha Garconvil, and Alexandra Sylvester. Thank you to these champions for Leaf!
